With car insurance, that is.  Each state has its own rules and regulations about insuring your vehicle, and Virginia does not make it mandatory that you have any kind of coverage at all, as long as you pay a fee of five hundred dollars to the Motor Vehicle Department.  I happen to live in New York, where it is mandatory, so when I learned of this I thought it was a pretty good idea.  But then I thought about it more…

Accidents Do Happen and it Can Happen to You

No one ever plans for an accident when they go to the store for a loaf of bread or some milk, but that’s why they’re called “accidents”.  They just happen, out of nowhere.  I live in a rural area, so the whole deer thing is always a problem.  If you hit a deer, your car will be pretty much totaled, and you will be lucky to walk away with just a few minor injuries.  It has actually happened to me just once in over 15 years.  I hit a deer, went into a ditch and my air bags went off.  Thankfully I did not incur and injuries, but my car was trashed.  It only takes one such incident to make you glad you had auto insurance.

Virginia’s Basic Car Insurance Rules

Virginia is a “fault” state, meaning that if you’re involved in an accident, the other people involved have several options, depending on who was thought to be at fault.  Everyone could decide to simply file a claim with their own insurance companies.  In which case, if you are uninsured, you don’t have to.  But being uninsured leaves you open to the other options, which would not be so good.  If you were thought to be at fault, in any way, and were found to be uninsured, then there could be a court case.  And you would be financially libel for any and all damages that the court decides you owe the victims.  And I’m going to assume here that if you couldn’t afford automobile insurance, then you wouldn’t be able to pay the much higher costs that a court would impose.

The Right Option

Maybe if you hardly ever drive, simply paying the Motor Vehicle fee is an option.  But these days, basic insurance can be had for about $50.00 per month, which adds up to $600 per year.  You really get a lot of “bang for your buck” with that extra $100.  Being covered can save you a lot of money in the event of an accident, unfortunately an accident is not something you can foresee that’s why it’s important to have insurance. Insurance has become more affordable than ever and it would be wise to get covered, you wouldn’t drive your car without a seat belt on, the same thing can be said about insurance.
